The Hepatic Tanager is not frequently seen in Ceará. Most accounts of the avifauna of northeastern Brasil do not list the species for this state (see Pacheco and Bauer 2000 for review). Ridgely and Tudor 1989 are not clear about the range (Ceará is in the range description on p. 307, but not in the map on p. 306).

The first register of the species in Ceará is for the municipality Icapuí in eastern Ceará (Albano and Silva 2000, see below). There are also 2 reports of P. flava in Chapada do Araripe (Oniki and Willis 2002 (see below), Nascimento et al. 2000).
