Reserva Ecológica Mãe-da-Lua, October 2007, in the dry season. In the foreground, the dried-up reservoir and lowlands. In the background, the "Serra dos Vertentes".

This photo was made with a broken lens, but I hope it still gives the reader an idea what the nature reserve looks like after a few months without rain. The mountains appear light gray-brown, because most trees have lost their leaves by now.

There is a high risk of wildfires at this time of the year. A frequent cause of wildfire is the local style of "slash-and-burn" agriculture. Farmers take some precautions when they set fire to the areas where they will plant later; however, they don't worry about the mountains, and no effort is made to stop a fire from expanding into the mountain forest. In a discussion about such fires, a typical reply would be: "Well, a fire in the mountains does not matter. We just let it burn." And it does burn, for days, and sometimes for weeks.
